How to be fearless about pursuing your business idea

“Look, this is how it works. You’re going to die one day. I know that’s kind of obvious, but I just wanted to remind you in case you’d forgotten. You and everyone you know are going to be dead soon. And in the short amount of time between here and there, you have a limited amount of f*cks to give. Very few, in fact. And if you go around giving a f*ck about everything and everyone without a conscious thought or choice – well, then you’re going to get f*cked.”

an extract from The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck by Mark Manson, page 13

This quote is raw, intense and emotional.

It’s the truth.

We all are on this planet for a certain amount of time. How long? No one knows.

What I do know is that I need to be aligned with my values and work towards my purpose and passion every single day. If I don’t I can notice the difference in my attitude and behaviours. If I’m not working in alignment with my passion and purpose, I’m not as engaged at work, I don’t spring out of bed to go to work and I can put things off.

  • Becoming clear on your “why” is so important. When you’re just starting out it business it can be really hard to find your why – I know it took me multiple attempts before I found my Why. But what I can tell you is that when you embark on your startup journey, push yourself out of your comfort zone and keep trying new things you will get there. If you’re having a hard time finding your why I use these questions by Tal Ben-Shahar, who is the professor of one of the most popular courses at Harvard on Happiness, to craft your calling:
  1. What gives me meaning?
  2. What gives me pleasure?
  3. What are my strengths?

TIP 2 – Define Success

  • We live in a world where success is depicted through the perfect house, family, car, handbag, shoes etc… It’s really easy to get caught up into all that stuff. Success means different things to different people, so defining success on your own terms means you only compare yourself to yourself and no one else. My definition of success is feeling in alignment. Being happy and having time to spend on the things I most enjoy. This means at any time in my workday or life I can stop and ask myself am I having fun and feeling good? If I am then I am successful and if I’m not then I know I need to make a pivot to get there.

  • Whatever I do I make sure I am all in. I don’t see the point in half committing to one thing and half committing to something else. That means I make the decision to sacrifice something else in order to be all in. I also hold myself accountable and have an accountability buddy, I still have fun, spend time with my family and occasionally catch up with friends – I just schedule it in and make time for what’s important.

There will be many roadblocks on the way to creating your business, make sure you are not one of them. Being fearless doesn’t mean you don’t get scared or worried. It means you feel the feeling and you choose to act anyways. We have limited time here and the time will pass whether you pursued your business idea or not – so what are you waiting for?
